This invention relates to the use of combinations of certain antitumoral compounds to treat specific kinds of tumors. The invention is based on the fact that the antitumoral effect of the natural flavonoid silibinin, an inhibitor of the mTOR pathway, is strengthened in certain tumor cell lines when used in combination with inhibitors of the PI3K/Akt pathway. This synergistic effect has been demonstrated in tumor cell lines derived from cervical, gastrointestinal and liver cancers. This invention thus establishes the basis for the development of new and more efficient combinations of antitumoral compounds for the treatment of the cancers described.
