The National Center for Cardiovascular Research Carlos III (F.S.P.) (CNIC) has been conceived to develop excellent, competitive, and internationally relevant research related to cardiovascular diseases. The CNIC has a 24,000 m² research center located in Madrid, with more than 6,000 m² dedicated to laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment.

A Predoctoral Researcher position is announced to work in the Hematovascular Pathophysiology group, under the supervision of Dr. José Javier Fuster Ortuño.

Functions:

The selected candidate will carry out their doctoral thesis within the framework of the project “Mutations in DNMT3A and clonal hematopoiesis in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (D-CLONAL)” (reference PID2024-157283OB-I00), awarded to Dr. José Javier Fuster. The selected candidate will use a range of experimental techniques (including flow cytometry, immune cell culture, histology, and advanced imaging techniques, among others) to characterize experimental models of clonal hematopoiesis and cardiovascular disease.

Mandatory Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's degree in the field of Biomedical Sciences.
  2. Minimum of 1 year of previous experience in research laboratories (8 months for candidates with a disability greater than 66% and 10.5 months for candidates with a disability greater than 33%).
  3. Admission to a doctoral program at the time of formalizing the contract (not required during the selection and interview process, but mandatory for the contract to be finalized).
  4. Not having exhausted the maximum of 4 years of contract under the same predoctoral scheme in accordance with Article 21 of the Spanish Science Law.
  5. Not already holding a PhD degree from any Spanish or foreign university.

Evaluable Criteria:

Requirements related to the academic and/or scientific-technical background of the candidate

C1. Scientific-technical contributions. The academic record will be evaluated (15%) as well as other curricular merits of the candidate (e.g., awards, authorship of research articles and/or reviews in indexed scientific journals, conference communications, etc.) (15%), and the relevance of these to the tasks to be performed based on their training and professional experience (10%).

C2. Mobility and internationalization. The relevance and impact of the candidate’s stays in national and international research centers and/or in the industrial sector will be evaluated, taking into account the prestige of the host institution and the activities carried out during the stay.

Requirements related to the suitability of the candidate for the research activities to be carried out

C3. Knowledge and/or experience in experimental models of atherosclerosis, abdominal aortic aneurysm, or heart failure.

C4. Knowledge and/or experience in the use of experimental models for the characterization of hematopoiesis.

C5. Knowledge and/or experience in cell culture techniques applied to the characterization of inflammatory responses.

C6. Knowledge and/or experience in immunofluorescence and flow cytometry techniques.

C7. Interview (English fluency will be evaluated).

Positive action: A correction factor of 1.5 per year of experience will be applied when assessing the total years of experience in criteria where experience is evaluated, in cases where the candidate certifies a disability greater than 66%, and a factor of 1.2 where the candidate certifies a disability greater than 33%.

  • Predoctoral Researcher contract of 1 year, renewable up to a maximum of 4 years in accordance with Article 21 of the Spanish Science, Technology and Innovation Law (consolidated text of Law 14/2011, of June 1), funded by the project “Mutations in DNMT3A and clonal hematopoiesis in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (D-CLONAL)” (reference PID2024-157283OB-I00) awarded to Dr. José Javier Fuster under the 2024 “Proyectos de Generación de Conocimiento” call of the Ministry of Science and Innovation, funded by MCIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by FEDER, EU, provided that the selected candidate meets the legal requirements for the formalization of the contract in accordance with applicable regulations.

Recruitment Plan:

The RESOLUTION OF THE SECRETARIAT OF STATE FOR PUBLIC FUNCTION APPROVING THE COMMON ACTION CRITERIA FOR THE RECRUITMENT PROCESSES IN THE STATE PUBLIC SECTOR ENTITIES of April 11, 2022, set forth in point 6.1 that “Unless a specific regulation establishes a merit-bases recruitment system (concurso), the competition (concurso-oposición) must be the recruitment system”

In CNIC, the specific regulations approved by the Foundation's board of trustees establish a merit-based recruitment system (concurso) including a personal interview.

At least 3 candidates with the highest score (as long as they reach the minimum of 65 points as a sum of evaluation criteria (C1-C6) will be interviewed. The candidate with the highest score will be hired given the total score (C1-C7) is higher than 85 points.
