Jacob Fog Bentzon trained as a medical student in atherosclerosis research with professor Erling Falk at Aarhus University, Denmark, and after receiving his M.D. in 2003, he returned to this lab to complete his Ph.D. thesis on the source of smooth muscle cells in vascular lesions. For this work, he received the Daniel Steinberg New Investigator Award in 2007.
As a post.doc. at the Department of Human Genetics, Aarhus University, he led a collaborative effort to develop the first transgenic minipig model of atherosclerosis worldwide. He subsequently held assistant and associate professor positions at the Department of Cardiology, Skejby, Aarhus University Hospital and the Department of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University, heading a research team devoted to experimental research in vascular disease. Several students from this lab have over the years won awards and special recognition for their work. In September 2015 he moved to CNIC, Madrid, to start up a new laboratory focusing on translational research in atherosclerosis. He maintains a part-time affiliation to Aarhus University, Denmark.
